Training on Using & Visualizing Data in Journalism

About the Event:
Including data in news stories can help the public understand complex information, and online tools available for free have made it easier to create impressive charts, maps, and other visuals.
However, it’s still not easy to know when, how, and why to use these tools effectively. In this workshop, Washington State University Associate Professor Lisa Waananen Jones will present examples from her data work with The New York Times and local media organizations, as well as global examples of data visualization in hard news and other topics such as sports, entertainment, and environmental science.
Through discussion and simple hands-on activities, workshop attendees will learn about obtaining or creating data, analyzing datasets for story ideas, and presenting information with visuals to help their audience better understand numbers.
This workshop is designed for journalists, but the tips and ideas are also relevant for those who communicate with public audiences in areas such as health, government, and academic research.

About the Speaker:
Lisa Waananen Jones teaches journalism and visual media at the Edward R. Murrow College of Communication at Washington State University. She earned her master’s degree in journalism at Columbia University in New York City and has worked at The New York Times and regional newsrooms in graphics, multimedia, and traditional print reporting. She was part of the New York Times team that won the 2021 Pulitzer Prize for public service for coverage of the Covid-19 pandemic in the United States.
