Training on How to Write More Interesting News Stories

About the Event:
The primary struggle we face as journalists is connecting with our audience and convincing them to care. This is easier with breaking news, which has a clear sense of urgency. However, with more complex stories, like climate change or foreign wars, readers might feel mentally or emotionally detached when the topics don’t immediately affect them.
In this workshop, Washington State University Assistant Professor Alison Boggs will guide workshop attendees on a journey through narrative storytelling, including gathering relevant descriptions, soliciting personal stories that humanize complicated issues, and creating a structure that draws the reader in and makes them care.
Through presentations, examples, and interactive discussion, this workshop will discuss ways to make your stories more compelling and provide tips on using literary techniques to enhance writing.

About the Speaker:
Alison Boggs is an award-winning former journalist who teaches news reporting and writing at the Edward R. Murrow College of Communication at Washington State University (WSU). She earned her master’s degree in journalism at the Missouri School of Journalism in Columbia, Missouri, and worked as a reporter, editor, and online producer for more than two decades at a daily newspaper in eastern Washington. She also runs an international reporting program at WSU, in which a select group of students travels to a foreign locale to report stories.
