Serenade with a Dandelion

About the Event:

In January 2024, UCLA’s Armenian Music Program released a set of four CDs (“Serenade with a Dandelion”) dedicated to the Armenian classical chamber music of periods ranging from Komitas to the modern day, including a number of world premiere recordings. 

The event is a presentation of the CD set, with some of the featured composers in attendance. The presentation will also include fragments of the actual recordings, as well as a live performance.

About the Speaker:

Artur Avanesov is an assistant professor at the American University of Armenia. An active contemporary music performer, he has contributed to the foundation of a number of Armenian and international contemporary music ensembles. He has collaborated

and performed with such musicians as Pierre Boulez, Krzystof Penderecki, Rohan de Saram, Kim Kashkashian, Vladimir Chernov, Tony Arnold, Tigran Mansurian, and Movses Pogossian, among many others. As both a composer and performer, Avanesov has released CDs with labels such as Deutsche Grammophon, Brilliant Classics, Albany Records, New Focus Recordings, Suoni e Colori, and others. His chamber, vocal, choral, and piano compositions have been performed at international music festivals and other events in numerous countries.

Movses Pogossian is a Distinguished Professor of Violin at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, as well as the founder and advisor of the UCLA Armenian Music Program. As a chamber musician, Pogossian has performed with members of the Tokyo, Kronos, and Brentano string quartets and with such artists as Kim Kashkashian, Jeremy Denk, Lynn Harrell, Ani and Ida Kavafian, and Rohan de Saram. A committed champion of new music, Pogossian has premiered over 100 compositions and works closely with composers such as György Kurtág, Kaija Saariaho, Tigran Mansurian, Gabriela Lena Frank, Artur Avanesov, and Vache Sharafyan. Pogossian’s discography includes the Complete Sonatas and Partitas by J. S. Bach, albums “Inspired by Bach,” “Blooming Sounds,” “In Nomine,” and “Hommage à Kurtág.”
