In(Sight) House Talks: Hagop Barish: A Genocide Survivor’s Life Story

March 28 @ 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm +04

About the Event:

Hagop Barish: A Genocide Survivor’s Life Story is a graphic novel. We hear the tales of survival and the hardships that the Armenian Genocide survivors had to endure, the struggles they had to encounter. Yet why is it that we never question what became of their lives? Not in the sense of establishing a new life but reflecting on how much the massacres influenced them on a traumatic scale that ultimately affected their behavior moving forward. Storytelling is a powerful tool. I wanted to use my illustrations to bring the oral story to life. I wanted the viewer to connect to my great grandfather, Hagop Barish, on a deeper level as the events of the Genocide and the life he went on to live are better depicted through visual imagery. Hence, the concept of creating a graphic novel.

In(Sight) House Talks is part of a larger ongoing initiative, Oral History Matters, that is meant to make oral history more visible as a research methodology. The series is an extension of the collectively curated exhibition by a team of recent AUA graduates in August 2023, showcasing their research creation projects and capstones. How can oral history open up space for forms of knowledge that have been denied and silenced by dominant and oppressive research practices? How can we build deep connections with our research participants? What insights do we gain from them about our research process and ourselves as researchers? How do we voice silences? These are some of the questions the speakers will explore.

About the Speaker:

Vana Anbarson (BAEC ’23) graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and communications from AUA.
