GIS Symposium Co-organized by AUA GIS Remote Sensing Lab and Armenia’s Real Estate Cadastre Committee

YEREVAN, Armenia ‒ On November 30, government officials, as well as members of research, academic, and educational institutions gathered for the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Symposium at the American University of Armenia (AUA).

The Symposium, the first ever such event in Armenia, was organized to identify GIS-based mapping and planning activities in Armenia that support policy making and public administration.

The ultimate aim is to explore the possibility of developing an integrated cadastre system and creating a national spatial data infrastructure (NSDI). The Cadastre Committee of the Republic of Armenia (RA) is studying European Union’s infrastructure for spatial information (INSPIRE) to guide the process in Armenia.

The seven-hour long Symposium was co-organized by the AUA GIS and Remote Sensing Lab and the RA National Cadastre Committee. The AUA GIS and Remote Sensing Lab is a joint initiative of the AUA Acopian Center for the Environment and the AUA Zaven and Sonia Akian College of Science and Engineering (CSE).

The first part of the Symposium comprised presentations by government organizations, academic and research institutions, private sector representatives and NGOs. In the second part of the Symposium, a two-hour roundtable discussion focused on NSDI and creating an integrated cadastre system in Armenia.
