Nursing Outcomes Research and Primary Care Delivery for Older Adults by Nurse Practitioners

September 8, 2023 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm +04

Nursing Outcomes Research and Primary Care Delivery for Older Adults by Nurse Practitioners -- event at the American University of Armenia featuring AUA alumna Dr. Lusine Poghosyan

About the Event:

The number of advanced practice nurses, such as nurse practitioners (NPs), is growing significantly in the United States (U.S.). NPs are registered nurses with either master’s or doctoral training and scope of practice that allows them to assess, diagnose, treat patients, and prescribe necessary medications and tests to assure patients receive high-quality care. In the near future, almost one-third of all primary care providers in the U.S. will be NPs. This workforce plays a key role in delivering safe, high-quality care, particularly to older adults with chronic conditions. This seminar will present and discuss research on the policy and organizational barriers affecting the optimal utilization of the primary care NP workforce and the care that NPs deliver to older adults.

About the Speaker:

Lusine Poghosyan, Ph.D., MPH, RN, FAAN, is the Stone Foundation and Elise D. Professor of Nursing at Columbia University School of Nursing and Professor of Health Policy and Management at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health. Dr. Poghosyan is also the executive director of the Center for Healthcare Delivery Research and Innovations at Columbia University. She is an internationally recognized nurse scientist with health services research expertise and studies primary care organizations, the nursing workforce, teamwork, and quality of patient care, particularly for older adults with chronic diseases, racial and ethnic minority patients, and those living in underserved areas. Her research produces evidence to support the optimal use of nurse practitioners as primary care providers and build direct care teams to ensure patients have access to timely, safe, and high-quality primary care. This work is key to eliminating persistent health disparities.

Dr. Poghosyan is the principal investigator on multiple federal and foundation-funded research projects supported by the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, National Institute on Aging, National Institute of Nursing Research, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, American Nurses Foundation, and National Council of State Boards of Nursing, among others. She is a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and the New York Academy of Medicine. She will join the AcademyHealth Board of Directors in December 2023. She served as past chair of the Primary Care Expert Panel at the American Academy of Nursing and past chair of AcademyHealth’s Interdisciplinary Research Group on Nursing Issues Advisory Board. Dr. Poghosyan has been recognized for her contributions and is a recipient of multiple awards, including the International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame from Sigma Theta Tau International, the American Nurses Foundation Scholar award, Mentorship and New Investigator Awards from AcademyHealth’s Interdisciplinary Research Group on Nursing Issues, and a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Nurse Faculty Scholar award.

Dr. Poghosyan received her Master of Public Health degree at the American University of Armenia (AUA). As a proud alumna of the University, she is excited to share her expertise with the next generation of nursing professionals.
