Ensuring the Safety of Autonomous Vehicles Through Model-Based Approaches and Optimization Algorithms

About the Event:
Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) controlled by advanced machine learning techniques are gaining significant popularity. However, current safety engineering standards cannot ensure that the AI components of AVs will prevent unsafe situations with a designated level of reliability.
The common approach to prevent these scenarios is subjecting AVs to test scenarios and evaluating their system-level quality of service, where the perpetually changing environment with which AVs must interact should be considered.
Join us for the “Ensuring the Safety of Autonomous Vehicles Through Model-Based Approaches and Optimization Algorithms” talk by Aren Babikian, a final-year Ph.D. student at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at McGill University, to explore various techniques to address the scenario-based system-level testing challenge for AVs.

About the Speaker:
Aren A. Babikian is a final-year Ph.D. student at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. His research focuses on the safety assurance of autonomous cyber-physical systems (e.g., self-driving cars) through formal methods, model-based engineering approaches, and meta-heuristic search techniques. He has published related research papers at the Fundamental Approaches to Software Engineering conference (FASE 2020), at the International Conference on Model Driven Engineering Languages and Systems (MODELS 2020), and in the Software and Systems Modeling journal (SOSYM 2021). He has also done related internships at NVIDIA and Amazon Web Services.
