2 min read

YEREVAN, Armenia In February and March of 2024, the American University of Armenia (AUA) Master of Laws (LL.M.) program announced an open class series for prospective applicants and legal professionals. Open courses on Artificial Intelligence and Law by LL.M. Program Chair Adelaida Baghdasaryan, Public International Law by Associate Professor Dr. Armen Mazmanyan, and European Convention on Human Rights by Associate Professor Arman Zrvandyan were offered.

The Artificial Intelligence and Law class addressed issues related to intellectual property and artificial intelligence (AI) systems. A number of current U.S. court cases on copyright infringement by AI product and service developers were analyzed and possible outcomes discussed.

During the Public International Law class, Dr. Mazmanyan discussed how to make sense of international law following the International Court of Justice’s Advisory Opinion on Kosovo and the key international law positions concerning self-determination and the legitimacy of secession.

In the European Convention on Human Rights course, students explored the main principles of the right to a fair trial, such as access to a court, adversarial trial, equality of arms, presumption of innocence, independent and impartial tribunal, and trial within a reasonable time.

The open classes gathered law students from different universities, including Yerevan State University, French University in Armenia, Russian-Armenian University, and Eurasia International University, as well as students from AUA’s undergraduate programs.

The open class series was a valuable opportunity for participants to gain insight into AUA’s teaching methods and environment, communicate with AUA LL.M. program students and faculty, participate in class discussions, and obtain knowledge and practical skills in subjects of interest. The series also posed an excellent opportunity for networking and making new friends with the AUA law community. The participants will periodically be informed of events organized by the AUA LL.M. program and maintain their connection with AUA. Attending these open classes has assisted the students in thinking about and building new perspectives for their future career path.
