CHSS Students Share Impressions of Their Studies at the University of Salzburg

2 min read

SALZBURG, Austria Two students of the American University of Armenia (AUA) Master in Political Science and International Affairs (MPSIA) and Bachelor of Arts in Politics and Governance programs (BAPG) spent their fall 2023 semester at the Paris Lodron University of Salzburg, Austria (PLUS) as Erasmus+ exchange students. MPSIA’s collaboration with PLUS dates back to 2016: since then, about twenty AUA students majoring in political science have spent a semester in Salzburg. Recently, Arman Hakobyan (MPSIA ’24) and Zhaneta Hovsepyan (BAPG ’25) returned to Armenia with enriching experiences and unforgettable memories, which they elaborate on below.

“My academic journey at the University of Salzburg has predominantly resulted in substantial learning, attainment of essential interpersonal and intrapersonal skills, and exposure to extensive and multifaceted cultural diversity. As for my impressions of the city, surrounded by the spectacular Alps and the picturesque Salzach River, Salzburg captivates with its stunning natural beauty. As a student in Salzburg, I have consistently found inspiration in the panoramic landscapes that surround the city, providing the ideal setting for studying, exploring, and savoring,” says Hovsepyan.

She continues, “The primary difference between the educational style of AUA and the University of Salzburg has been that the latter places a strong emphasis on the theoretical dimension of political science, while AUA largely prioritizes the practical aspects of the learning process.”

Expanding on the question of educational style, Hovsepyan notes: “I truly was stunned at the quality of the literature provided within the scope of the classes at the University of Salzburg: courses such as Methods in Political Science, Geographies of Inequalities, and Economic Drivers of Armed Conflicts equipped me with the comprehensive understanding and skillfulness necessary to critically assess scholarly pieces and conduct quality research. These competencies in turn enabled me to engage thoughtfully with complex socio-political phenomena and contribute meaningfully to the academic discourse.”

Hakobyan added: “I became a member of the big and diverse Erasmus community mainly by luck, applying for the exchange program just hours before the submission deadline. Later, I understood that it had been a life-changing experience that supported my personal growth. Living in a new environment is a challenging but valuable experience. Studying at the University of Salzburg offered me many opportunities to develop my academic skills and enrich my knowledge. Additionally, Salzburg’s location is perfect for curious travelers. Being an Erasmus student means exploring new places and cultures and joining a network of international students. Erasmus does not keep students confined in a closed circle. You are free to decide how you are going to spend your semester abroad. My formula is to find a balance among various activities, like studying, traveling, and getting together with peers. Based on my personal experience, I recommend you apply for the programs and represent Armenia and AUA on the international level.”

Founded in 1991, the American University of Armenia (AUA) is a private, independent university located in Yerevan, Armenia, affiliated with the University of California, and accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission in the United States. AUA provides local and international students with Western-style education through top-quality undergraduate, graduate, and certificate programs, promotes research and innovation, encourages civic engagement and community service, and fosters democratic values.
