YEREVAN, Armenia — The American University of Armenia (AUA) Bachelor of Arts in Politics and Governance program (BAPG) added a new dimension of educational enrichment. Four undergraduate students had the opportunity to spend a semester abroad as exchange students at the Freie Universität Berlin through the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Commission.

This exchange was a pioneering experience for the BAPG program in its third year from the start. Establishing ties with Freie Universität Berlin, with over 150 degree programs in various fields, creates new opportunities for student exchanges. Notably, the Freie Department of Political and Social Sciences is highly reputed in Germany for its research-intensive program. The students returned from their semester abroad enthusiastically and eager to share their experiences.

During their visit, the students explored various facets of the German government, gaining valuable insights into its administrative structure and programs also delving into the country’s history and evolution. Another captivating aspect of their study-abroad experience involved active participation in Erasmus events, which included a welcome party and organized activities, including hikes and a celebration of the 75th anniversary of Freie Universität Berlin.

Mikayel Aivazian (BAPG 25) expressed profound appreciation for the remarkable personal growth and development he experienced. He states, “As a politics student, Berlin provided an exceptional environment for exploration, especially considering its historical significance. Delving into the contrasting dynamics of Eastern and Western Germany was a captivating and enlightening experience.”

Ani Jinanyan (BAPG 25) shared her appreciation for the opportunity to explore the distinct and diverse cultures they came across, noting the exceptional life balance they found among the local people.

Gayane Manukyan (BAPG 25), with her proficiency in German, quickly formed friendships and actively participated in both on-campus and off-campus events. Additionally, she engaged in professional discussions with the international community there, noting that the semester there was an excellent opportunity for networking and fostering international connections.

Nane Avetisyan (BAPG 25) summed up her exchange experience, saying, “I was impressed by their strong commitment to the rule of law and their remarkable dedication to environmental sustainability. Their emphasis on leading a healthy lifestyle, centered around cycling and walking, is impressive, and the presence of green parks all around adds to the city’s charm. This experience provided us with valuable insights and motivation to take better care of our environment.”

The students shared their positive impressions of the German language course, regarding it as a unique opportunity to delve into German history and culture. They also acknowledged how their research methodology skills, honed through courses in their major at AUA, significantly enhanced their performance in Berlin, particularly acclaiming the Human Rights Data course. In comparison to their study experience at AUA, they noted the lack of comprehensive feedback and found the American-style education to be more friendly and dynamic. Overall, these exchange students returned with enthusiasm, poised to embark on a new semester at AUA enriched by the international experiences that had broadened their horizons!
