YEREVAN, Armenia — The American University of Armenia (AUA) is pleased to announce that Associate Professor and Assistant to the President on Academic Affairs Dr. Vahram Ter-Matevosyan’s monograph Turkey, Kemalism and the Soviet Union: Problems of Modernization, Ideology and Interpretation has been translated into Turkish and published by İletişim Publishing.

“A few publishers from Turkey and Russia offered to translate the book. From the Turkish side, I decided to go with the İletişim Publishing house. It took around three years for them to obtain the copyright, translate, and publish the book,” explains Dr. Ter-Matevosyan, adding, “Hopefully, the Russian version will be published some time next year.”

The original of the monograph was published in 2019 by Palgrave Macmillan as part of the book series on Modernity, Memory and Identity in South-East Europe. It was well received by Turkish, European, and American scholars. Since then reviews of the book have appeared in leading journals in the field, including Turkish Studies, The Soviet and Post-Soviet Review, Insight Turkey, and Ab Imperio, among others.

The monograph delves into the history of Kemalism by introducing the hitherto unknown Soviet perspectives on Kemalist ideology. It discusses major problems in the existing interpretations of Kemalism and how the incorporation of Soviet perspectives enriches the historiography and modern understanding of that ideology.

“Now, more than ever, we need to have a deep understanding of Turkish history, politics, mindset, and strategic priorities. The fact that my book on Kemalism is translated into Turkish and published by a reputable publisher is an important milestone. Historical research on critical interpretations of Kemalism — Turkey’s founding ideological construction — is now accessible to more readers in Turkey. Among other chapters, the Turkish translation includes slightly revised sections on how the Armenian Genocide and its denial are closely intertwined with Global Fascism and Kemalism,” remarks Dr. Ter-Matevosyan, adding, “ I want to thank Ruben Melkonyan and Delal Dink, my good friends, for their unwavering support during the publishing phase of the book.”

AUA places a high priority on academic research and publications in all spheres, including the humanities and social sciences. In this regard, Dr. Ter-Matevosyan’s contribution as a scholar in the field is of particular significance.
