Creating the Republic’s Infrastructure

The Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU) Armenia and the American University of Armenia (AUA) are co-hosting a lecture series dedicated to the centenary of the First Armenian Republic.

About the Event:

Amid difficulties in several minority-populated enclaves and constant hostilities along the borders, the Armenian government attempted to create the framework of a democratic republic. This lecture and discussion will focus on the measures taken to lay the foundations of a republican form of government, while also dealing with internal  tensions, not only among the several Armenian political parties, but also within the dominant party Dashnaktsutiun. The role of the Diaspora also came into play, as Armenian partisanship, regionalism, and dualism threatened the future of the Republic and of the Armenian people itself. But by 1920, significant progress had been made and there were signs of hope, both domestically and internationally.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Richard Hovannisian is an Armenian-American historian and professor emeritus at the University of California, Los Angeles. A prolific scholar of Armenian history, his many works include an inimitable four-volume history of the First Republic of Armenia, a series of books on the regions of Western Armenia, and an oral history project to record the eyewitness accounts of Armenian Genocide survivors.

Ազգային փոքրամասնություններով բնակեցված բազմաթիվ տարածքների անհնազանդության և սահմանային մշտական լարվածության պայմաններում Հայաստանի կառավարությունը փորձում էր դնել ժողովրդավարական հանրապետության հիմքերը: Այս դասախոսությունը և քննարկումը կդիտարկեն այն միջոցները, որոնք կառավարությունը ձեռք էր առնում  հանրապետական տիպի պետության հիմքերը դնելու, ինչպես նաև ներքին լարվածությունների դեմ պայքարելու նպատակով: Ներքին լարվածություններն առկա էին ոչ միայն քաղաքական կուսակցությունների միջև, այնպես էլ իշխող Դաշնակցական կուսակցության ներսում: Ստեղծված իրավիճակում Սփյուռքը նույնպես ունեցավ իր դերը, քանի որ կուսակցական կողմնակալությունը, տեղային հատվածականությունը  և պատվիրակությունների երկվությունը սպառնում էին ոչ միայն Հանրապետության ապագային, այլ նաև հենց հայ ժողովրդին: Սակայն մինչև 1920թ.-ը նկատելի առաջընթաց տեղի ունեցավ, և բարելավման նշաններ ի հայտ եկան թե՛ երկրի ներսում, թե՛ միջազգային ասպարեզում:

Ռիչարդ Հովհաննիսյանը ամերիկաբնակ պատմաբան է և Լոս Անջելեսի Կալիֆորնիայի համալսարանի պրոֆեսոր: Հայտնի է Հայաստանի Առաջին Հանրապետության (1918-1920թթ.) մասին պատմող իր քառահատոր  գիտական աշխատանքով:
