Transboundary Water Cooperation in the Kura-Araks Basin: Challenges and Opportunities

About the Event:
Dr. Aram Gevorgyan will give an overview of the transboundary cooperation in water resources management in Kura-Aras basin over the past 20 years. He will highlight outcomes and emerging challenges as well as current developments on possible transboundary cooperation between Armenia and its neighboring countries.
About the Speaker:
Dr. Gevorgyan is an experienced professional in data management, GIS, building information systems, and using remote sensing technologies for environmental decision-making and management. He has more than 22 years experience working in various national, regional, and international projects as an expert on data management, GIS, and information systems, practicing in the field of water resources management, disaster risk reduction, and biodiversity conservation. His specific activities include development of information systems in the field of environment and water resources management in the South Caucasus, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, preparation of river basin management plans according to EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) approaches, classification of land cover/land use based on remote sensing data, as well as construction of biodiversity clearing-house mechanism during a one-year international experience at UNEP-WCMC office in Cambridge, UK. Dr. Gevorgyan’s studies include an M.Sc. in in mathematics from Yerevan State University Faculty of Informatics and Applied Mathematics (1992 to 1997), an M.Sc. in environmental sciences and policy from the Central European University, Hungary (1998 to 1999), and a Ph.D. in biology from the Institute of Molecular Biology, Armenian National Academy of Sciences (2001).
