The Gospels of Queen Keran

May 3 @ 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm +04

About the Event:

Emma Chookaszian’s study is dedicated to one of the most splendid manuscripts of the Armenian kingdom of Cilicia, commissioned by Queen Keran in 1272 (Treasury of the Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem, manuscript number 2563). Chookaszian’s work analyzes the artistic transition of the Armenian miniature painting to the post-Roslin era and the iconographic and stylistic innovations adopted by the three artists illuminating this luxurious Gospel book. Valentino Pace, Professor Emeritus of Medieval and Byzantine Art History at Italy’s Università di Udine, has provided a preface to the study. Publication of this study has been aided by grants from the Terzyan Foundation and the National Association for Armenian Studies and Research.

About the Speaker:

Emma Chookaszian is an adjunct lecturer at the American University of Armenia. She earned her Doctor of Art History and Medieval History from the University of Paul Valery (Montpellier) and is a medievalist and an expert in Armenian miniature painting, working with private collections worldwide. She is currently curating the private collection of Armenian manuscripts of Gary Tatintsian (Dubai, UAE).

Chookaszian has authored many articles and presented at international conferences. She is the recipient of a number of grants and fellowships for her work, including the Global Excellence grant from the French government, Sirarpie Der Nersessian grant for Armenian studies, Calouste Gulbenkian Global Excellence grant, and the AGBU grant for Armenian Studies. “The Gospels of Queen Keran: Transition to Post-Roslin Era in Armenian Miniature Painting of Cilicia” is Chookaszian’s second monograph. Her first monograph, entitled “The Gospel of Prince Vasak and the Iconographic Traditions of Armenian Miniature Painting of Cilicia” (2023), is on Prince Vasak’s second Gospel and it sheds light on the iconography and style of this particular manuscript, analyzing it in the context of other royal manuscripts and offering a new historical approach to the life of its commissioner.
