The Future of the European Union in Global Politics — Reflections on the Elections to the European Parliament and the EU’s Strategic Agenda

June 19 @ 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm +04

About the Event:

In her first term as president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen emphasized a shift toward a more geopolitical European Union (EU), moving beyond economic interdependence to consider power dynamics and spheres of influence. This change is evident in granting EU candidate status to three Eastern Partnership countries. However, the rise of right-wing populism across EU member states complicates this trajectory. As EU leaders negotiate the strategic agenda for the next five years, including priorities like global engagement and enlargement, disagreements persist on the EU’s role and capabilities. The discussion focuses on the EU’s future actions, particularly in Eastern Europe and the South Caucasus.
