Legal Study Presentation: The Rights of Persons with Mental Disorders in Armenia

June 12, 2014 @ 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm +04

On June 12, 2014, the American University of Armenia (AUA)’s LL.M. program, in cooperation with the Civil Society Institute, is holding a presentation of the Legal Study on the Rights of Persons with Mental Disorders in Armenia. The Legal Study was prepared by the LL.M. Program Chair Mr. Arman Zrvandyan with the support of the Civil Society Institute. The presentation by Chair Zrvandyan will be followed by a round-table discussion.

The Legal Study is unique in Armenia in terms of the research focus and the issues covered. For the first time, it highlights the rights of persons with mental disorders to private life, to liberty and to a fair trial. It analyzes both the relevant legislation and the practices in Armenia. The analysis of the domestic laws and practices is then compared with relevant regional and international standards. In particular, the Study analyzes the domestic practices in light of the legal positions expressed by the European Court of Human Rights, Council of Europe instruments, as well as the legal instruments of the United Nations. The Study ends with a number of recommendations to the judiciary, policy-maker and psychiatric institutions.

The presentation and discussion will take place in AUA’s Paramaz Avedisian Building in room 133W from 2-5 PM. If you would like to participate, please send an email to [email protected] stating your name, surname and organization, or call (+374 10) 51 27 55.
