AUA Extension Course: Human Resource Management

This course is designed as an overview of the Human Resource Management (HRM) function and the HR manager’s role in managing the employee career cycle from entry to exit. It acquaints participants with the authority, responsibility, functions, and problems of HRM.  Topics include: human resource management, contemporary issues in HRM: ethics, diversity and globalization; the HRM and employee supervisor partnership; human resource planning and productivity; job description analysis, development, and design: recruiting, interviewing, and selecting employees; competency iceberg model; performance management and appraisal systems; employee training and development: disciplinary action and employee rights; employee compensation and benefits; labor relations and employment law; and technology applications in HRM.

Course Outcomes: 

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand human resource management from a systemic, strategic perspective
  • Describe the field of “human resource management” and understand its relevance to managers and employees in work organizations
  • Describe fundamental employment laws in the U.S.
  • Conduct a competency gap analysis and a basic job analysis
  • Apply this analysis to human resource management systems such as selection, performance appraisal, and compensation
  • Recognize basic human resource management tools such as performance appraisal forms, and understand some of the technical details of human resource management practices
  • Apply relevant theories to the management of people in organizations
  • Analyze challenges involving human resource systems

Instructor

Arpie G. Balian holds a business degree from the American University of Beirut, a Master’s in Executive Leadership from the American University, Washington D.C., and a doctorate from the University of Southern California in Planning, Policy and development. She has held leadership positions in the U.S. government for over 15 years.  She has also taught courses in strategic planning, performance management, and other performance-related courses in the U.S. government as well as in several institutes and universities both in the U.S. and in Armenia.  She has conducted over 100 workshops in Argentina, Europe, North America, and the Middle East.  Dr. Balian has extensive experience in applications of modern concepts of HR management.

Enrollment:
To enroll you can either (1) come to the AUA Extension Office to complete your application, (2) e-mail your completed application, or bring your completed application to us. The applicable enrollment fee is payable, in cash, either at Tandem machine at AUA main building etrance or at AUA Cashier’s Office, main building, 5th floor, Room 514M. The cashier’s Office is open from 10:00 to 16:00, Monday to Friday.
The filled in application form together with the payment receipt completes your enrollment.
