Forum Series Beyond the Campus: Alumni Stories Subhiyeh: Beyond the Coffee Cup
May 4, 2023 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm +04
About the Event:
Beyond the Coffee Cup will explore the ritualistic effects of morning coffee practices on the lives of women in Aleppo, Syria, looking at gendered spaces, gossip, and generational changes through an anthropological lens. The talk will delve into the concept of women-only private spaces that are born out of a need for a support system, the patterns of gossip, and how they weave into community making, as well as how the Subhiyeh ritual shifts with the younger generation from a private to a public place through comparing and contrasting different generational aspects.
Beyond the Campus: Alumni Stories is a monthly series hosted by the AUA General Education program that aims to foster sustained relationships and professional networks among AUA alumni, students, and faculty, as well as help current students explore opportunities and make post-graduation career or further education plans. The forum is free and open to the public.
