Armenia: A Look at Progress From Independence to Today

About the Event: 

This discussion is part of the Teacher Fellowship Program in Armenia organized by the Genocide Education Project (GEP).

GEP is a nonprofit organization working with educators in teaching about genocide and human rights. This summer, GEP will host its third Teacher Fellowship Program in Armenia, during which 15 middle and high school teachers will engage in professional development services. During the program’s second phase, Fellows will provide professional development services for other educators in their region, under the supervision of GEP.

The initial phase of the Teacher Fellowship Program includes a 10-day trip to Armenia, with academic and workshop sessions at the Armenian Genocide Memorial-Institute and the American University of Armenia (AUA).

The discussion, to be held in the AUA Small Auditorium, aims to provide a look at Armenia’s progress from independence until now.

About the Speaker(s):

Dr. Naira Sahakyan, Assistant Professor, AUA

Dr. Naira Sahakyan is an assistant professor in history at AUA. Her research focuses on ethnoreligious nationalism and political discourses in the Caucasus and the Middle East. She earned her Doctor of Philosophy degree in Humanities from the University of Amsterdam (Netherlands) and a Master’s degree in Islamic Studies from Yerevan State University (Armenia).

Dr. Vardan Baghdasaryan, Associate Professor and Program Chair, Master of Science in Management, AUA

Dr. Vardan Baghdasaryan is an assistant professor and chair of the Master of Science in Management program at AUA. He has been teaching various economics-related courses since 2014. Dr. Baghdasaryan has been a senior consultant at AVAG Solutions, Ltd., providing consulting to various international donor agencies.

Dr. Hasmik Kyureghyan, Executive Director and Co-Founder, Paradigma Educational Foundation

Dr. Hasmik Kyureghyan holds her doctorate from the University College of London. She is a co-founder and CEO of Paradigma Educational Foundation, which initiates and implements educational projects across Armenia.
