This conference, open to the AUA community as well as participants in civil society, included speeches and remarks from AUA President Dr. Bruce M. Boghosian, Program Chair of AUA’s PSIA Program Dr. Douglas Shumavon, Ambassador of France His Excellency Henry Renault, Head of the Political, Economic, Press and Information Section, Delegation of the European Union to Armenia Mr. Onno Simons, Ambassador of the United Kingdom His Excellency Mr. Jonathan Aves, Head of the European Union Division in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia Mr. Mher Margaryan, as well as AUA’s Assistant Professor in the PSIA Program and Jean Monnet Chair of European Studies Dr. Syuzanna Vasilyan.

The Inaugural Conference announced the nomination of the Jean Monnet Chair of European Studies. Dr. Vasilyan explains, “the Inaugural Conference was original both in terms of format—given the participation of high-level diplomats and dignitaries—and substance—covering both bilateral relations between major EU member-states and Armenia, as well as the EU’s policy. By bridging policy and academe, the conference provided the AUA community and civil society in Armenia with an opportunity to learn about the EU as a unique entity, to view EU Studies as a novel and expanding field of academic inquiry, as well as to understand the EU’s policy towards the South Caucasus in various domains of public life.”

All speakers offered their congratulations to Dr. Vasilyan, who shared her plans for the future as Jean Monnet Chair of European Studies: “In the upcoming few years, in my capacity as Jean Monnet Chair of European Studies, I will foster not only teaching and research hinging on the EU but also organize various valuable activities such as guest lectures and Model EU at AUA.”
