YEREVAN, Armenia On April 2, the American University of Armenia (AUA) Master of Laws (LL.M.) program hosted Grant Hanessian, an independent arbitrator from New York and chair of the Arbitration Council of the Arbitration and Mediation Center of Armenia (AMCA). He delivered a public seminar tracing the evolution of arbitration and mediation during his four decades of experience in the field, from Iran-U.S. claims to the establishment of AMCA. Hanessian, former global head of international arbitration at the Baker McKenzie law firm, provided invaluable insights into the shifting landscape of international dispute resolution.

Beginning with the topic of Iran-U.S. claims, Hanessian shed light on the pivotal moments that shaped the trajectory of arbitration. These historic cases not only demonstrated the efficacy of arbitration in resolving complex cross-border disputes, but also highlighted the need for a more structured and efficient mechanism.

Hanessian’s discussion then transitioned to the establishment of an arbitration and mediation center in Armenia, emphasizing the growing importance of alternative dispute resolution mechanisms in emerging markets. By providing a neutral platform for both domestic and international parties to resolve their disputes efficiently and confidentially with trusted arbitrators and mediators, such centers play a crucial role in promoting investment and economic development.

Throughout his seminar, Hanessian emphasized the importance of adaptability and innovation in the field of international arbitration. With the rapid globalization of commerce, arbitrators and mediators must remain abreast of emerging trends and technologies to effectively address the evolving needs of their clients.

Moreover, Hanessian underscored the significance of diversity and inclusivity in arbitration proceedings. By fostering a more diverse pool of arbitrators and mediators, the field can better reflect the perspectives and experiences of all parties involved, ultimately enhancing the legitimacy and fairness of the process.

Ultimately, Hanessian’s seminar provided a comprehensive overview of the past, present, and future of international arbitration. Through his rich insights and experiences, he highlighted the enduring importance of arbitration and mediation in resolving cross-border disputes and promoting global commerce.
