2 min read

YEREVAN, Armenia On March 15, 2024, the American University of Armenia (AUA) Extension held a Training of Trainers (TOT) with 25 participating instructors from Yerevan and regional Extension centers of Gyumri, Yeghegnadzor, Vanadzor, Goris, Dilijan, and Kapan. This full-day training was designed to upgrade the skills and knowledge of English language instructors, while enhancing their pedagogical methodology.

The TOT comprised three sessions, each addressing important aspects of English language instruction. Facilitated by recognized experts from the AUA Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) program, the training immersed participants in intense learning and various skill-building activities.

The day kicked off with a session dedicated to exploring the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools within student-centered classroom teaching methodology led by Dr. Irshat Madyarov, associate professor, Master of Arts in TEFL program chair, and director of the Center for Research in Applied Linguistics. The material shared with participants illustrated new approaches for leveraging technology like ChatGPT, Natural Reader and visual AI tools to enrich the students’ learning experience by way of promoting active participation and the use of tailored teaching methods.

Following this, Chris Edling, an NYU Fulbright Scholar at AUA, delved into the subject of lesson planning and classroom engagement. Drawing from his wealth of experience in the teaching profession, Edling provided insights into crafting dynamic lesson plans that captivate learners’ attention and foster active participation in the learning process.

The final session of the TOT was held by adjunct lecturer Anna Gevorgyan, who presented the subtleties of teaching grammar and vocabulary. She equipped instructors with practical strategies to integrate grammar and vocabulary instruction into meaningful contexts, helping learners to grasp linguistic concepts with more clarity and confidence.

The success of the TOT underscores AUA Extension’s commitment to excellence in education and professional development. By equipping instructors with the tools and knowledge they need to thrive in their profession, AUA Extension continues to pave the way for transformative learning experiences and encourage empowered teaching and learning.
