YEREVAN, Armenia – The American University of Armenia (AUA) Acopian Center for the Environment (ACE) hosted Dr. Dagmar Mayer on January 26 for a talk on problems that affect stray animals worldwide. According to Dr. Mayer, who works as a veterinary surgeon in Munich, Germany, the solutions lie in sterilization and the provision of sustainable veterinary care.

Dr. Mayer underscored the importance of sterilization as the only effective, humane, and sustainable solution to the problem of stray dogs. She also gave an overview of Worldwide Veterinary Service (WVS), a UK-based organization that works internationally to improve animal welfare by providing sustainable veterinary care. Dr. Mayer serves as international veterinary manager at WVS. In this capacity, she travels around the world to help make a difference for stray animals by assisting charities working for animal welfare.

During the talk, Dr. Mayer also addressed questions regarding when and how to euthanize a dog. She talked about volunteer placements and surgical training for those who may be interested. WVS assists its associated charities by helping to find volunteers on an ongoing basis.
