About the Event:
The AUA Manoogian Simone College of Business and Economics, in collaboration with the Stockholm Institute of Transition Economics (SITE), invites you to attend a research seminar titled “Women in Politics: Why Are They Underrepresented and Does It Matter?” presented by Dr. Pamela Campa, associate professor of Economics at the Stockholm School of Economics (SITE), Sweden.
The seminar will take place on July 6 at 12:00 p.m. in Conference Room 233W, PAB.
During this presentation, Dr. Campa will discuss her research and the broader literature on women in politics. She will begin by providing an overview of the extent to which women remain underrepresented in political office, particularly in senior leadership positions, with a special focus on Armenia. The seminar will then explore why women’s underrepresentation in politics is a matter of concern and review evidence on its most likely causes, including voter discrimination, the role of political parties as gatekeepers, and women’s lower propensity to seek or attain positions of political power. Finally, Dr. Campa will discuss the effectiveness of policies designed to increase women’s political representation, with particular attention to gender quotas.

About the Speaker:
Dr. Pamela Campa is an associate professor of economics at SITE – Stockholm School of Economics. She is also a research fellow at CEPR (Labor, Public and Political Economy), a research affiliate at the House of Sustainable Society at the Stockholm School of Economics and the Dondena Gender Initiative at Bocconi University, and an invited researcher at J-PAL Europe. Her research spans the field of political economy, environmental economics, and gender economics and has been published in leading general interest and field journals such as the Journal of Political Economy, the Review of Economics Statistics, the Journal of Public Economics, AEJ: Economic Policy and the Journal of Environmental Economics and Management.
