Quantum Simulations With Rydberg Atoms: From Epidemic Dynamics to Quantum Optimization

About the Event:

Rydberg atoms have emerged as a powerful platform for exploring quantum systems and developing new approaches to quantum information processing. With their strong, long-range interactions, they make it possible to simulate complex many-body systems and investigate phenomena that connect quantum physics with problems far beyond it.

In this colloquium, Dr. Michael Fleischhauer will introduce the fundamental interactions between Rydberg atoms and discuss how they can be used to realize different quantum spin models and operate neutral-atom quantum computers.

The talk will then explore two very different applications in more detail:

  • Epidemic dynamics: the facilitation dynamics of Rydberg excitations in a gas resembling epidemic models, with a transition between an active phase of indefinite excitation spreading and an absorbing phase.
  • Quantum optimization: the application of quantum annealing of spin systems for solving quadratic unconstrained optimization problems.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Michael Fleischhauer is a professor of theoretical physics at Rheinland-Pfälzische Technische Universität (RPTU) Kaiserslautern-Landau, Germany. His research includes theoretical quantum optics, coherent processes in atoms and other quantum systems, quantum properties of nonlinear optical processes, quantum information processing with photons and ensembles, matter-wave optics and many-body physics with darkstate polaritons. He served as a research associate at the University of New Mexico, USA and Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, Germany before joining the faculty of the University of Kaiserslautern, Germany (RPTU Kaiserslautern-Landau).
