Project Results and Achievements: H. Hovnanian Family Foundation Environmental Grant

About the Event:

Join us for the presentation of the main results of the H. Hovnanian Family Foundation environmental grant project focused on Lake Sevan research and strengthening Armenia’s national hydrometeorological and environmental monitoring capacity.

The event will be held on July 13 at 1:00 p.m.in Conference Room 133W, PAB.

In 2025, AUA announced that Dr. Habet Madoyan, B.S. in Data Science program chair, and assistant professor at the Zaven P. & Sonia Akian College of Science and Engineering (ACSE) was awarded a competitive environmental grant from the H. Hovnanian Family Foundation. The project is led by Dr. Madoyan and implemented in collaboration with Dr. Vahe Movsisyan, adjunct lecturer at ACSE and researcher at the Engineering Research Center, whose expertise in data mining and statistical analysis contributes to transforming environmental data into actionable insights. Together, they will demonstrate how the project transforms environmental observations into actionable scientific insights and policy-relevant knowledge.

The project integrates research and capacity-building activities aimed at strengthening Armenia’s environmental monitoring and data analysis capabilities. Key outcomes include the development of forecasting tools for spring flood characteristics, capacity building in climate data processing using the climatol R package, and an automated air pollution dashboard for real-time monitoring and visualization of air quality indicators. This work is carried out in close collaboration with the “Hydrometeorology and Monitoring Center” SNCO under the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Armenia.

The presentation will also showcase how the project advances understanding of Lake Sevan’s water quality dynamics and supports evidence-based decision-making for climate resilience and water resource management. A key component of the project is a joint research paper developed with Dr. Gayane Shahnazaryan, deputy director of the “Arm Hydromet” SNCO and author of the forthcoming publication, and Dr. Martin Schultze, researcher at the Department of Lake Research, Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research, Germany, who serves as co-author. Dr. Schultze brings over four decades of expertise in aquatic systems and water quality research.

The initiative is implemented in close partnership with AUA, the “Arm Hydromet” SNCO, and the H. Hovnanian Family Foundation, ensuring scientific excellence, practical relevance, and long-term sustainability, while reinforcing the connection between research, policy, and practice. Representatives of the H. Hovnanian Family Foundation will also deliver remarks on the project’s significance and its contribution to environmental research and capacity building in Armenia.
