On Simulating Ground Motions and Using Them in Seismic Collapse Assessment Studies

November 5, 2018 @ 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm +04

About the Event:

Despite continuous increase in the number and geographical spread of seismic recording stations, recordings of strong ground motions that are most damaging to structures (e.g., from large magnitude earthquakes and at short distances from the rupture) are still rather limited. The availability of strong ground motions is important in seismic assessment studies and for seismic design of structures. In such applications, realistic synthetic ground motions can be used in addition to or in place of recorded motions, but they must be able to capture the important characteristics and properly represent the natural variability of recorded motions for given earthquake source and site characteristics.

This talk starts by presenting some recent ground motion models that can be used to generate synthetic ground motions for performance-based earthquake engineering (PBEE) applications. Then some examples of seismic collapse assessment studies are provided, including ongoing studies on older reinforced concrete buildings in Lebanon. The prospects of using synthetic motions in these studies are also discussed.

About the Speaker:

Mayssa Dabaghi is an Assistant Professor at the department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the American University of Beirut (AUB) in Lebanon. She obtained her BE in Civil Engineering from AUB in 2008, and her MS and PhD in Structural Engineering, Mechanics and Materials from UC Berkeley in 2009 and 2014, respectively. Her research interests lie in the area of earthquake engineering and include modeling and simulation of earthquake ground motions, seismic hazard analysis, and more recently the seismic collapse assessment of structures.
