Latest trends & methods in Water Research: Shared Experiences from Lund University

About the Event:

Join us for an interesting afternoon where colleagues from Lund University will talk to us about their current research projects, the latest methods in water research, and lessons learned for improving water governance. The speakers and their topics in led:

Kenneth M Persson, Professor, Division of Water Resources Engineering, Lund University
Topic: Current water research at Lund University

Christian Alsterberg, Adjunct Senior Lecturer, Division of Water Resources Engineering, Lund University
Topic: The Importance of local cooperation for improving water quality and quantity in a drinking water reservoir

Hossein Hashemi, Associate Professor, Department of Water Resources Engineering and Center for Advanced Middle Eastern Studies, Lund University
Topic: Application of Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) technique in groundwater monitoring and evaluation

The talks will be followed by an open discussion with present stakeholders to investigate potential use cases of these techniques in Armenia and enhance research collaboration between the two countries.

About the Speakers:

Kenneth M Persson is a professor at Lund University, division of water resources engineering since 2010. He graduated in food engineering at Lund University in 1994 with the thesis: Characterization and fouling studies of MF and UF membranes and has been working as a technical manager at a water treatment company in Malmö, Sweden, and as a technical consultant at Sweco Environment AB, Malmö, Sweden prior his employment as a professor. He is also part-time employed as a research manager at the utility Sydvatten, South Sweden Water Supply since 2010.

He is a chemical engineer by training with documented experience in water treatment, management, water reuse, desalination, and solid waste management, as well as the design and operation of drinking water treatment plants and landfills. He has more than 25 years of experience in the design, operation, and troubleshooting of water treatment plants for different source waters and has a broad international experience from Europe, the Middle East, Latin America, Africa, and Asia due to research contacts and technical consulting services in water supply, desalination, water reuse and other aspects of water management.

As a professor, he has been the main supervisor for 15 Ph.D. and is presently the main supervisor of six PhD-students at Lund University.

He has been a member of several Ph.D. committees and opponent at PhD-examinations in Australia, Brazil, Denmark, Finland, India, Kazakhstan, and Sweden during the last 20 years and is a Fellow of the Royal Physiographic Society in Lund and the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences in Stockholm. He has about 260 publications in English and Swedish, mainly on water resources, water management, and water treatment.

Christian Alsterberg works as a research leader at the drinking water company Sydvatten AB and is also a senior lecturer in water resources engineering at LTH. Christian is an aquatic ecologist specializing in water management for lakes used as drinking water reservoirs. He collaborates with organizations and entrepreneurs, constructing measures for improving water quality, such as wetlands and management plans for professional fishing. Christian is also involved in several research projects aimed at optimizing wetlands to mitigate brownification, water balance and budgets for catchment areas, evaluation of current water management in Sweden as well as how environmental monitoring in lakes can be digitalized.

Hossein Hashemi is an associate professor at the Department of Water Resources Engineering and Center for Advanced Middle Eastern Studies at Lund University, Sweden. He obtained his Ph.D. in Water Resources Engineering, where he specialized in groundwater management, water harvesting techniques, and groundwater artificial recharge. These techniques are essential in ensuring the availability of water supply and reaching sustainable water resources use in arid regions. He also worked as a postdoctoral scholar at the Center for Groundwater Evaluation and Management (GEM), Department of Geophysics at Stanford University, USA, between 2015 and 2017. During his time at Stanford, he focused on the application of remote sensing techniques in the field of hydrology and groundwater hydrology. This included studying various aspects such as precipitation, temperature, groundwater, and subsidence. Hossein’s research interests mainly revolve around remote sensing, climate change, and surface water and groundwater management.
