About the Event:
When defining the demands of a theory of justice, it is essential to set limits as to how far such demands should extend. For instance, if one is an egalitarian, does it mean that one should get egalitarian considerations involved in each and every of our daily decisions? And what about decisions that we take as part of specific roles, be they professional ones (lawyer, physician, etc.) or non-professional ones (neighbor, parent, friend, etc.).
Professor Axel Gosseries’s paper attempts at bridging theories of justice and the literature on role morality. As part of the latter, when endorsing specific roles, we are often expected to be partial toward certain groups (our patients as opposed to the patients of others, our clients as opposed to those who are not our clients, etc.). This raises the question of whether, when deciding about how to act as part of such roles, we should abandon any concern for impartiality and justice.
About the Speaker:
Professor Axel Gosseries is a Fund of Scientific Research Professor (Maitre de recherches) and a professeur extraordinaire at Louvain. He is also a Franz Weyr Fellow of the Czech Academy of Science (CELAPA, 2015-19) and a Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Institute for Future Studies (Stockholm, 2016-2019).
He holds degrees in law from St. Louis and UCLouvain, environmental law (LL.M., 1996, School of Oriental and African Studies), and philosophy (Ph.D., 2000, Louvain, Dopp Prize 2001).
