Environmental Protection and Human Rights Law under Armenia’s BITs

About the Event: 

The aim of the webinar is to provide a general introduction about the protection of the environment and international investment law, as well as, to the legal framework in which the interaction between investment protection and human rights considerations takes place. The speakers will analyze the strengths and weaknesses of bilateral investment treaties as tools for setting and regulating corporate social responsibility (CSR), as well as will present the current state of some of Armenia BITs from that perspective and assess what general steps are available to Armenian authorities to better align its BITs with its environmental and human rights objectives.

About the Speakers: 

Camilla Gambarini – Gambarini is a senior associate in the litigation and arbitration team at Withers LLP. She is dual qualified as an avvocato (Italy) and as a solicitor (England & Wales), she specializes in international arbitration and public international law matters and is a member of the Chartered Institute of International Arbitration. She has represented clients in international commercial and investment arbitrations under the auspices of ICSID, UNCITRAL, ICC, LCIA, CIAC, and CAM rules.  

Levon Golendukhin – Golendukhin is an international dispute resolution associate at Eversheds Sutherland. Prior to joining Eversheds Sutherland, he worked for a global law firm, where he counseled clients from sovereign states to private companies in mining, agricultural, and transportation sectors. In addition, Golendukhin has authored publications on topics in international investment law and investor-state arbitration and is a co-chair of the International Investment and Development Committee at the American Bar Association.

Julian Scheu – Scheu is a junior professor of public law, international law, and international investment law at the University of Cologne and general manager of the International Investment Law Centre Cologne (IILCC). He studied law at the Universities of Cologne and Paris (Panthéon- Sorbonne) with a specialization in international economic law (LL.M./Maîtrise en Droit, 2009; Dr. jur., 2016) and is qualified to practice law in Germany.
