SUMMARY:Current Debates About National Identity In Armenia
DESCRIPTION:About the Event: \nComing from different fields (philosophy\, anthropology\, linguistics\, and political science)\, the participants of this Turpanjian Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) symposium will pick up on themes from the 2025 conference on National Identity in a Time of Crisis\, co-organized by ETICA\, TISS\, ASOF and NYU. The symposium will reflect on current controversies and debates about national identity in Armenia. \nTopics to be discussed will also include the ruling party’s view that it is necessary to reshape Armenian identity\, including the debate on the “Real Armenia” doctrine\, the status of Mount Ararat\, the de facto proscription of references to Artsakh\, the questioning of the causes of the Armenian Genocide or the suggestion that the number of its victims should be counted\, and more. Among other things\, the symposium will ask whether it is possible to reshape national identity by fiat\, whether such attempted reshaping has collective roots\, or whether comparable attempts have succeeded in the past and\, if so\, under what conditions. \nThe symposium is hybrid. Please\, register here to receive a zoom link. \nThe moderator of the symposium is Director of the Turpanjian Institute of Social Sciences Dr. Stephan Astourian. \n  \nAbout the Speakers: \nDr. Paul Boghossian \nJulius Silver Professor of Philosophy; Director of the Global Institute for Advanced Studies\, New York University \n  \nDr. Aghasi Tadevosyan \nSenior Scientist\, Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of the National Academy of Sciences\, Armenia \n  \nDr. Henry Theriault \nAssociate Vice President for Academic Affairs\, Worcester State University; Professor of Philosophy \n  \nDr. Suren Zolyan \nProfessor\, Higher School of Communications and Creative Industries; Head of the research group “Modes of Social Semiotics\,” Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University \n  \nTigrane Yegavian \nLecturer on the South Caucasus and the Middle East\, Schiller International University and ISEP Engineering School; Researcher\, French Center for Research into Intelligence
