Conversation with the 2018 Aurora Humanitarians
June 6, 2018 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm +04
About the Event:
The 2018 Aurora Humanitarians will introduce their work, the causes that motivate them, and discuss the support that they need to deliver tangible change in their communities.
This year’s Aurora Humanitarians were chosen by the Aurora Prize Selection Committee from more than 500 nominated individuals due to their inspiring work and commitment to advancing humanity around the world:
About the Humanitarians:
Mr. Aung is a human rights activist who advocates for the recognition of the Rohingya people as citizens of Myanmar. He regularly criticizes the government of Myanmar for racial and religious discrimination, claiming it has failed to protect the human rights of the Rohingya people. Mr. Aung was arrested and imprisoned multiple times between 1986 and 2014 for standing up on behalf of the Rohingya people.
Ms. Krishnan is a human rights activist and one of the most passionate voices fighting for women’s empowerment. A survivor of gang-rape at age 15, she co-founded Prajwala, the world’s largest NGO advocating against sexual violence and trafficking. Through her efforts, tens of thousands of women have benefitted from psychological healing, economic empowerment and a civic identity, leading to the successful integration of survivors into society.
Friar Héctor Tomás González Castillo
Friar Tomás is a Mexican human rights activist and the founding director of La 72, a shelter on the Southern Mexican border created to provide safe housing to Central American migrants fleeing violence, extortion, forced recruitment and human rights violations in Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador.
