Big Data Reshaping Healthcare

Disruptive power of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (AI) is emerging across many industries, but its impact on healthcare is especially significant and promises to be really life-changing. From precision medicine, hospital care, clinical research and drug development to health insurance and predicting treatment outcomes, AI is already demonstrating enormous potential in revolutionizing how the health sector works. Growing healthcare expenses forces us to rethink how to make healthcare more effective – shifting from episodic and reactive care to continuous and proactive care. And in this era of genomics, microbiome, wearable devices, smart sensors, mobile medicine, 3D printing, robotics and Internet of things, the healthcare industry is tackling many of its challenges by investing heavily in high tech and big data technologies. The “Amazonification” and “Uberization” effects are already transforming healthcare; and treating patients more like retail consumers will be a conceptual shift for health industry, making it cheaper, more efficient, and accessible.

Dr. Harutyun Shahumyan is a Marie Curie alumnus and currently works as a senior data scientist at United Health Group in Ireland. Shahumyan holds a master’s degree honors in applied mathematics and a Ph.D. in engineering. His expertise includes machine learning, deep learning, statistics, modelling and GIS. Shahumyan has over 12 years of academic experience working at University College Dublin, the University of Maryland, the University of Cambridge and the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia. He has over 50 publications focused on geospatial modelling, model integration, predictive analytics and application of decision support systems.
