Beyond Pragmatism: Revisiting Iran’s Foreign Policy in the South Caucasus

May 4, 2022 @ 4:30 pm - 6:00 pm +04

PSIA Seminar: Beyond Pragmatism: Revisiting Iran's Foreign Policy in the South Caucasus - May 5, 2022, American University of Armenia, Political Science and International Relations program

About the Event:

The “Beyond Pragmatism: Revisiting Iran’s Foreign Policy in the South Caucasus” presentation is based on Alen Shadunts’ doctoral research on Iran’s foreign policy in the South Caucasus after the collapse of the Soviet Union. The study offers a new perspective on the issue, deviating from the popular argument of considering Iran’s behavior pragmatic. It shows how dualities, hesitance, status anxiety, and routinized practices are an integral part of the policies of the Islamic Republic in the region.

About the Speaker:

Alen Shadunts has recently finished his doctoral studies at the University of Oxford. His dissertation named “Beyond Pragmatism: Iran’s Foreign Policy in the South Caucasus” explores Iran’s behavior in the respective regional space in a new light.

His research interests include Iran’s foreign affairs, non-western identity in international relations, poststructuralist discourse theory, and conceptual developments at the intersections of International Relations theory and area studies.

Alen also has an MSc Degree in International Relations from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and is a graduate of the Master of Political Science and International Affairs (MPSIA) program at the American University of Armenia (AUA).
