Armenian Wonderwomen: Discovering Feminism and Stories of Armenian Women Through Children’s Literature

About the Event:
This event will combine a book launch for Armenian Wonderwomen and a conversation with its co-authors. Gayane and Elmira will speak about their four-year journey of co-authoring Armenian Wonderwomen, what led them to embark on this creative project, and how they see their work moving forward.
Beyond the Campus: Alumni Stories aims to foster sustained relationships and professional networks among AUA alumni, students, and faculty, as well as help current students explore opportunities and make post-graduation career or further education plans. The forum is free and open to the public.
About the Speaker:
Gayane Aghabalyan (BAEC ’20) is a graduate of AUA’s Bachelor of Arts in English and Communications program. During her children’s literature course at AUA, Gayane wrote The Sunny Cook, a story about a young boy with Down syndrome which was later published by EDGE Publishing House. Currently, she is working on two other inclusive books to add to the series. With her friend Elmira Ayvazyan, Gayane co-authored and published Armenian Wonderwomen, another children’s book about historical and contemporary Armenian women. Gayane is also a teaching associate at AUA and a development officer at Child Development Foundation. Gayane is pursuing her graduate degree in education at the University of Glasgow.
Elmira Ayvazyan (BAB ’20) is a product manager at an IT company and describes herself as a tech enthusiast passionate about social change. Her vision is to use technology to solve puzzles contributing to people’s well-being. Elmira has also been involved in various projects, especially concentrating on gender equality, environmentalism, and the development of rural Armenia. As she herself has never had the chance to study Armenian women at school, Elmira wants the situation to change for younger generations with her co-authored new book titled Armenian Wonderwomen.
