YEREVAN, Armenia — The Center for Ethics in Public Affairs at the American University of Armenia is pleased to announce a recent publication by ETICA researcher Dr. Rory Aird in Noûs, widely recognized as one of the top three international philosophy journals, with a rejection rate of 93%.
The article, titled “Objecting and Quiescing, Aptly,” examines the epistemic norms that govern when and how people should object to asserted falsehoods.
While philosophical research has largely focused on whether people have a duty to object to false claims, the article explores what makes an objection a good one in the first place. Dr. Aird argues that a good objection is one that is apt — well-suited to the situation and successful for the right reasons.
The article also examines the choice not to object, which Dr. Aird calls “quiescing,” and considers when remaining silent can be an appropriate epistemic response.
Reflecting on his publication, Dr. Aird said, “My work tends to lean on the more applied side of philosophy so to publish my work in such a highly regarded generalist journal as Noûs is an honour and something I am very proud of. The topic (of objecting or not objecting to falsehood) is one that I think most would find pertinent in today’s day and age, so I hope people can get both practical and philosophical value (and even some entertainment) from reading it.”
