YEREVAN, Armenia — The American University of Armenia (AUA) is pleased to announce a new publication co-authored by Zaven P. and Sonia Akian College of Science and Engineering (ACSE) adjunct lecturer and Engineering Research Center researcher Dr. Vahe Movsisyan and ACSE Assistant Professor and B.S. in Data Science Program Chair Dr. Habet Madoyan in Water, an international peer-reviewed journal published by MDPI.
The paper, titled “Using Chemical Monitoring Data to Distinguish Natural Background Concentrations and Anthropogenic Impacts in Lake Sevan Tributaries, Armenia,” examines the chemical water quality of nine major rivers flowing into Lake Sevan using monitoring data collected between 2010 and 2024.
The study analyzes physicochemical parameters, nutrients, and trace elements to distinguish natural background concentrations from changes linked to human activity. The findings show that river chemistry is strongly shaped by geology and hydrological conditions, while higher concentrations of nutrients and selected trace elements in downstream areas are associated with agricultural runoff, urban discharge, and localized industrial impacts.
The research also identifies gaps in the existing monitoring network. While current data are sufficient for assessing the overall chemical status of the rivers, they are less effective in defining natural background levels and identifying individual pollution sources. The authors therefore recommend additional upstream reference stations and more targeted monitoring to improve water-quality assessment and management in the Lake Sevan basin.
The research was funded by the H. Hovnanian Family Foundation, with Dr. Madoyan leading project administration and funding acquisition.
