YEREVAN, Armenia — The American University of Armenia (AUA), under the leadership of President Dr. Bruce Boghosian, is currently developing its artificial intelligence (AI) strategy. The University will soon introduce its AI roadmap (White Paper) as part of its “Paving the Way for Future Leaders” strategic plan to empower talents to combine technology, creativity, and social commitment and transform societies. The White Paper extends to teaching, research, outreach, and institutional governance, creating a multifaceted ecosystem where faculty, students, and administrative staff play distinct yet interconnected roles. With this multistakeholder approach, government, industry, and other partners hold crucial positions in ensuring the effectiveness and relevance of AI integration in education.
AUA leadership is actively championing the application of AI across different areas of university administration, encouraging the development of practical systems that can improve efficiency, decision-making, and academic operations. One such successful project was carried out by a joint collaboration between faculty members and a student of the Zaven P. and Sonia Akian College of Science and Engineering (ACSE). Dr. Habet Madoyan, chair of the Data Science program at ACSE was solicited to form a small task force to lead efforts related to the development of AI agents for the University administration.
A multi-agent AI system, developed by AUA adjunct faculty member Gagik Khalafyan and data science senior student Armen Madoyan (BSDS ’26), as part of his capstone project, aims to address several operational challenges that can be automated using AI agents and large language models. The AI application was used to map institutional policies and assess which policies may require revision in light of the new organizational structure announced by the AUA President to the University community earlier in spring 2026.
Among the targeted tasks are providing answers to questions about institutional policies based on University policy documents using Retrieval-Augmented Generation, intelligent routing and coordination of heterogeneous academic requests, automated generation of course materials, and AI-assisted grading systems capable of evaluating handwritten or typed submissions against predefined rubrics. The project demonstrated that a modular multi-agent architecture can provide higher routing accuracy, stronger guardrail enforcement, and more reliable policy-grounded responses as compared to traditional single-agent systems.
The project serves as a clear example of how AUA is leveraging its in-house scientific and technical expertise to drive institutional innovation. Dr. Madoyan noted: “This project will continue to evolve. We are working closely with Armen Madoyan, Gagik Khalafyan, and others to implement agentic AI systems across additional university operations. The opportunities are enormous.”
“It is amazing to see how what we learn in the classroom becomes tangible and is used to solve everyday problems while dramatically increasing operational efficiency,” Madoyan added.
The system is already fully operational and has been tested on a highly practical institutional task: identifying policy changes required after modifications to the University’s organizational structure. Madoyan and his supervisor, Khalafyan, successfully developed and deployed an AI agentic system capable of answering policy-related queries by navigating more than 150 university policy documents with high accuracy.
Commenting on the initiative and its broader significance for the University, AUA President Dr. Boghosian said, “Even as AUA ramps up its teaching and research programs to include AI, it is remarkable that we can simultaneously use the lessons that we are teaching and studying for our own internal operations. The sophistication of this task required multi-agent AI to solve, but we were able to tap in-house expertise to solve a problem that would have taken a team of our faculty and staff far longer to complete.”
He added, “The set of policies of a university of this size is complex enough that sometimes changing one of them induces changes in many others in ways that are difficult to anticipate.There have been times when doing this by hand has resulted in conflicting policies and operating procedures. It is exactly the kind of detail-oriented task for which AI is very well suited.”
Dr. Boghosian also highlighted the educational value of involving a student in the project. “The fact that we were able to involve a student’s capstone research in this process is wonderful. It gave the student the experience of seeing ideas first learned in the classroom evolve to become a valuable tool for the University’s administration, so that his capstone became a practicum. I expect that AI will be used increasingly to facilitate this kind of experiential learning in the coming years,” he remarked.
As universities around the world explore how AI can transform education and administration, projects like this demonstrate that AUA is not simply following global trends, but actively contributing to them. By combining student research, faculty mentorship, and real institutional needs, the University continues to position itself as a place where innovation rapidly advances from the classroom and research labs into real-world applications.
