Student Journeys: A Six-Year Path From Data Science to Systems Management

14.05.2026

YEREVAN, Armenia — Ani Gumruyan’s (MEIESM ’26) journey at the American University of Armenia (AUA) began in 2020. Initially enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Data Science program, she became fascinated by how data insights could be transformed into tangible business solutions. This curiosity soon evolved into a desire to understand the mechanisms behind the information. “That led me to explore the systems data comes from, not just the data itself,” she explains. “That’s why I deliberately chose to continue with the Master of Engineering in Industrial Engineering and Systems Management (MEIESM) program.”

Through internships and professional work, Ani realized that truly mastering data requires an understanding of the systems that generate it. She appreciates that MEIESM treats data analytics as a core component of engineering rather than an isolated skill set. Reflecting on her academic evolution, she uses a vivid metaphor: “In data science, I had acquired the map to navigate the road, but I still needed to find that road — and maybe even build it myself. That’s what brought me to MEIESM.”

Currently working as a data scientist and data analyst, Ani found that her master’s studies and professional responsibilities began to complement each other almost immediately. Academically, the transition to MEIESM taught her to see “the bigger picture,” moving from granular details to understanding the entire process behind a “machine.” This shift has expanded her worldview and helped her develop a deep sense of professional resilience and confidence. “I’ve been at AUA for six years now. I started as a student who was simply amazed by data and how it works. Now, I’m becoming a professional who understands how to systematically analyze data and turn it into actionable results,” she says.

One of the program’s greatest strengths, according to Ani, is its diversity. Her cohort includes students from medical, business, and computer science backgrounds. This collaborative environment demonstrates that the best solutions emerge when people with different perspectives come together.

Ani’s hard work was recently recognized when she was honored as the second-best student in the engineering field at the Best Student Awards organized by the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports of the Republic of Armenia. “It was a very humbling recognition. To me, awards are not simply trophies — they represent recognition of years of effort, challenges, and persistence. Back in 2020, when I graduated from school, I also received a government award for academic excellence. At that moment, I realized how years of hard work can eventually become visible in a single achievement. This recent recognition felt like a continuation of that journey.” She credits this success not just to her own persistence, but to the support of her parents, the AUA community, and her program chair, Dr. Ashot Abrahamyan, who nominated her.

Throughout her time at AUA, Ani felt she was in the right field whenever her academic and professional lives intersected. Whether applying classroom theories to her job or using work challenges as project ideas, the synergy was constant. This growth became even more apparent when she began working as a teaching associate for undergraduate courses she had once taken herself. Applying “systems thinking” to her teaching, she realized she was no longer just explaining how to design a visualization or build a database, but helping students see how those components fit into a much larger whole.

When asked how she balances these demanding roles, Ani explains that her responsibilities are logical continuation of one another. “When you’re passionate about what you do, your responsibilities can actually energize you. Of course, it’s not easy. Sometimes maintaining balance requires sacrificing one thing temporarily in order to prioritize another. But when you begin seeing positive results in all areas, it becomes a new source of motivation. It pushes you forward even during moments when you feel overwhelmed.”

Ani credits her overall growth to the entire university experience, noting, “I genuinely believe every course and every professor contributed something meaningful to my growth. Every challenge and every interaction added to the knowledge and experience I’m taking away from AUA.”

Her advice to prospective MEIESM students is to focus on the system, not just the data: “Once your goal shifts from simply finding the right answer to actually solving the right problem, your mindset changes completely. That’s when you begin transitioning from being just a student into becoming a true professional.”

As she prepares to graduate this June, Ani does not see the milestone as a conclusion. “It feels more like a transition into a new stage. I’m excited to see where this road — the one I’ve been trying to build while holding the map in my hands — will take me next,” she says.

Founded in 1991, the American University of Armenia (AUA) is a private, independent university located in Yerevan, Armenia, affiliated with the University of California, and accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC) in the United States. AUA provides local and international students with Western-style education through top-quality undergraduate and graduate degree and certificate programs, promotes research and innovation, encourages civic engagement and community service, and fosters democratic values.
