AUA Alumni Reunite for Panel Discussion on the Armenian Genocide

14.05.2026

YEREVAN, Armenia — On April 28, the American University of Armenia (AUA) alumni community gathered for a panel discussion titled “Armenian Genocide: What to Research and Why It Matters,” organized by the AUA Office of Alumni Relations. Alumni from different generations and programs, along with faculty and staff members from the University community, came together to engage with critical questions surrounding research, interpretation, and the continued urgency of the topic more than a century after the Armenian Genocide.

The panel, moderated by AUA adjunct lecturer Dr. Varuzhan Geghamyan, featured notable experts such as, Dr. Stephan Astourian, director of the Turpanjian Institute of Social Sciences, and AUA adjunct lecturers Dr. Suren Manukyan and Dr. Edita Gzoyan (LL.M. ’12), who are actively shaping the field of genocide studies through both research and teaching.

The evening began with a networking reception at the Akian Art Gallery, where alumni had the opportunity to reconnect and meet the speakers in an informal setting. Over a selection of wines generously provided by Vayk Winery, attendees enjoyed meaningful conversations ahead of the formal program. Notably, the founder of Vayk Winery, Davit Zakaryan (MEIESM ’15), was present at the event to answer questions and share insights from his winemaking journey. His presence contributed to the welcoming and personal atmosphere of the gathering.

The discussion explored the origins of Armenian Genocide studies and what it means to research the topic today. Speakers addressed the questions that still demand attention, why the topic continues to matter 111 years later, and how Armenian Genocide studies is situated within the broader field of genocide studies. They also shared insights into the evolving directions of scholarship and its role in preserving memory, advancing knowledge, and informing global conversations on mass violence and justice. Following the discussion, the audience raised thoughtful and insightful questions for the panelists.

The conversation extended beyond the formal panel, continuing in an informal setting where attendees and speakers had the opportunity to further exchange perspectives, reflect on the discussion, and build meaningful connections over wine.

The event once again highlighted the strength of the AUA alumni network, a community committed not only to staying connected but also to engaging in a meaningful discourse on important issues.
