YEREVAN — Stakeholders from across Armenia’s policy landscape will convene on May 11, for the Green Agenda Armenia Conference 2026, a day-long event aimed at advancing the country’s green transition agenda. Hosted at the American University of Armenia (AUA), the conference seeks to build on growing national momentum toward sustainable development.
The event will bring together representatives from government agencies, international organizations, donor-funded initiatives, the private sector, academia, civil society, and media. Organizers emphasize that the diversity of participants reflects the cross-sector collaboration needed to address Armenia’s environmental challenges effectively.
“Last year, at the Green Agenda Armenia Conference 2025, we released our National Assessment of the Green Transition Readiness of Armenia, which identified progress and gaps in meeting the green transition challenge. This year, we will focus on what progress we have made toward addressing the challenges and expediting action on the green transition. This is not only a global imperative, but it is also a national one,” said Alen Gasparian Amirkhanian, director of the AUA Acopian Center for the Environment. “Many of the green transition actions directly enhance national security and public health and safety. This is why a close monitoring of progress on the green agenda is particularly important for a country like Armenia,” he added.
Participants will engage in plenary discussions and breakout sessions covering a wide range of critical topics. These include water resource management, air quality improvement, sustainable food systems, biodiversity conservation, chemicals and waste management, and the concept of a just transition. Another key focus will be aligning Armenia’s policies with the green transition priorities outlined in the Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement (CEPA) with the European Union.
Nane Khachikyan, project coordinator of the Green Agenda Armenia at the AUA Acopian Center, remarked: “This year, we are trying something we haven’t done before. We are organizing the event with another green agenda project, the EU4GreenRecoveryEast. We have also reached out to EU4Sevan+. Bringing all these related projects for the stocktaking of work being done, progress being made, and successes and challenges, is something we hope will become more common going forward.”
The conference is organized under the Sweden-funded Green Agenda Armenia project, implemented by the Stockholm Environment Institute and the AUA Acopian Center for the Environment. It is held in collaboration with the EU4Green Recovery East project, which supports Eastern Partnership countries in their transition to greener, more resilient economies.
Organizers note that the event is designed not only as a platform for dialogue but also as a space for identifying actionable solutions and strengthening partnerships. With Armenia preparing for increased global visibility on environmental issues, including hosting major international events, the conference is expected to play a key role in shaping the country’s sustainability trajectory.
