YEREVAN, Armenia — The American University of Armenia (AUA) is pleased to announce the publication of a new scholarly volume co-edited by AUA faculty member Dr. Jean-François Caron, 2025-26 C. Judson King Endowed Professor and interim program chair of the Master of Public Affairs and Master of Arts in International Relations and Diplomacy.
The book, released by Routledge, brings together leading international scholars to examine the far-reaching implications of the war in Ukraine on global politics and the evolving world order.
This interdisciplinary volume features contributions from experts in political science, economics, philosophy, history, and geopolitics. It offers a comprehensive analysis of the conflict, including the nature of the Russian regime, its relationship with the West, and the strategic, moral, and legal dimensions of the war. The book also critically evaluates Western responses, particularly in terms of military assistance to Ukraine, power competition, and the role of value-based alliances.
Reflecting on the publication, Dr. Caron said, “The world as we’ve known it for the past 30 years is now evolving in new directions with great powers trying to assert their power. Russia’s military intervention in Ukraine is the event that has accelerated this shift and in order to understand what it means for tomorrow’s world, it is important to comprehend the reasons behind the contestations of the post-1991 world order and the implications this shift will have on our lives.”
Co-edited in collaboration with Dr. Stipe Buzar from Libertas University in Zagreb, the volume examines how the war in Ukraine is reshaping international relations and signaling a shift toward a new multipolar global order, often seen as marking the end of the post–Cold War era of liberal convergence. In addition to his editorial role, Dr. Caron has also written a chapter entitled “Strategy here, strategy there: Who’s afraid of the Russian bear?,” which offers insights on how realistic the Russian threat is to the rest of Europe.
The book’s chapters address a wide range of timely and critical topics, including the rise of militant kleptocracy, Russia’s contestation of Western values, the evolution of Africa–Russia relations, and the broader geopolitical implications of the war across regions such as Southeast Europe and East Asia. Additional contributions analyze military aid to Ukraine, strategic competition, and the lessons the conflict may hold for future global flashpoints.
By offering a multifaceted perspective on one of the most consequential conflicts of our time, the volume serves as an important resource for scholars and students of international relations, as well as for policymakers and analysts seeking to better understand the shifting dynamics of global power.
