YEREVAN, Armenia — The American University of Armenia (AUA) is pleased to announce a new publication by Zaven P. and Sonia Akian College of Science and Engineering Associate Professor Dr. Sachin Kumar in Information, an open access, multidisciplinary journal published by MDPI. The article is co-authored by AUA student Anna Mikayelyan (BSDS ’26), and Dr. Olga Vorfolomeyeva from Kazakhstan.
Titled “Fluency Illusion: A Review on Influence of ChatGPT in Classroom Settings,” the paper explores how generative AI tools are affecting the way students learn. By reviewing 41 recent studies published between 2022 and early 2026, the authors found that while AI tools can make learning tasks faster and often increase students’ confidence, they do not always lead to deeper understanding of the material.
The study highlights a phenomenon known as the “fluency illusion,” where information that is easy to read or process — such as clear AI-generated explanations — can make learners feel they understand a topic better than they actually do. The review suggests that educators should be mindful of this effect and design classroom activities and assessments that encourage students to actively think through concepts rather than rely solely on AI-generated responses. It also calls for more research on how to use AI tools in ways that support genuine learning while minimizing misunderstandings about what students truly know.
Reflecting on the publication, Dr. Kumar said, “This work was motivated by a simple concern: students often feel they understand something just because it is explained clearly. With AI tools like ChatGPT, this effect becomes stronger. Our goal was not to question the usefulness of AI, but to better understand how it shapes students’ perception of their own learning. I hope this work encourages educators to think carefully about how AI is integrated into teaching and assessment.”
The paper is available on the publisher’s website.
