Hrach Sargsyan’s (LL.M. ’24) Career Focused on Justice and Public Service

This story is part of the “Scholarship Stories: Where Are They Now?” series, highlighting the journeys of AUA alumni whose education was made possible through donor-supported scholarships. This story features an AUA graduate who received support from the “Honoring Those Who Served” campaign, which played a key role in his academic and professional development.

Motivated by a desire to receive a robust legal education, Hrach Sargsyan (LL.M. ’24) decided to embark on the journey of studying at AUA. He hoped to receive an education that would equip him with the skills and knowledge necessary to practice law effectively in Armenia, while embracing critical thinking, clear communication, and a strong foundation in international legal principles. That is exactly what he found at AUA. The University’s American-style curriculum and its renowned emphasis on analytical thinking were significant factors that made the University stand out for Hrach. “I hoped that AUA would provide me with the tools to build a career grounded in justice, ethics, and service to society.”

Hrach vividly recalls the moment he learned he had received a scholarship. He was enjoying time with friends when an unexpected email arrived. Rereading the message multiple times to make sure he had understood everything correctly, he was overwhelmed with a mix of immense relief and joy. The news was more than just financial support; it was a sincere recognition of his hard work and aspirations. Excitedly, he called his family to share the news, and together, they celebrated, cherishing the validation that accompanied this milestone. During his studies at AUA, Hrach received the Dr. Mihran Agbabian Endowed Scholarship Fund, Janine Barsam Endowed Scholarship, and YMCA Scholarship Program

“The scholarship meant access,” Hrach shares. It removed a significant financial barrier and allowed him to devote his full attention to his legal studies. Without it, the challenge of balancing tuition and living expenses could have forced him to compromise on his academic pursuits or professional ambitions. The scholarship empowered Hrach to engage deeply with his education at AUA, fostering a focused and enriching experience.

Reflecting on his time at AUA, he still carries with him a commitment to integrity, discipline, and analytical rigor — values that the University instilled in him. The training in legal research, argumentation, and professional ethics continues to guide his professional journey. “More than that, I carry the belief that law can be a force for fairness and accountability when practiced with purpose,” says Hrach.

While enrolled in AUA’s Master of Laws program, Hrach was a team member in the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot in 2023 and 2024. Subsequently, he mentored the AUA team for participation in the same competition in 2025. Hrach serves as the coordinator for the LL.M. program’s Alternative Dispute Resolution Clinic, facilitating talks, workshops, moot courts, and engaging events related to the topic.

During his studies at AUA, Hrach has taken on the role of legal expert at the Center for Legislation Development Foundation within the Ministry of Justice. The solid footing in legal reasoning, research, and navigating complex regulatory frameworks that AUA provided him has proven indispensable in his career. The ability to approach his work with both precision and empathy has been crucial in a profession that demands it.

Without the scholarship, Hrach would have found it difficult to pursue legal studies in the same amount of depth or with the same dedication. The education he received at AUA provided a solid grounding in Armenian and international legal frameworks, as well as the critical thinking, writing, and oral advocacy skills essential for success in the legal field. “On a personal level, AUA taught me the importance of civic responsibility and ethical leadership — principles I try to uphold in every situation.”

The scholarship not only transformed his educational experience, but also reshaped Hrach’s view on the importance of generosity and access to education. He experienced firsthand the profound impact that financial support can have on a student’s life, reinforcing his belief that quality education should be a universal right.

If given the opportunity to speak with his donor today, Hrach would express heartfelt gratitude. “I would say thank you — not just for the financial support, but for the belief you placed in me. Your contribution offered me the opportunity to pursue a profession centered on justice and service. It is a gift I accept with responsibility and gratitude, and one that I aim to pay forward.”

Looking to the future, Hrach aspires to continue advancing in the legal field, seeking roles that enable him to influence policy, mentor upcoming lawyers, and advocate for systemic reform. His current path also involves preparing for the advocate license, indicative of his dedication to addressing real-world challenges through his legal training.

With a strong desire to support future students in a similar situation, Hrach envisions giving back to the AUA community through mentorship, guest lectures, or contributing to scholarship funds in the future. “I want future students — especially those from underrepresented or financially disadvantaged backgrounds — to know that they are seen, supported, and capable of achieving great things. AUA gave me the chance to grow; I want to help extend that opportunity to others, too. Benjamin Franklin once said, ‘An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.’”
