YEREVAN, Armenia — The American University of Armenia (AUA) is pleased to announce the publication of two chapters authored by Dr. Vahram Ter-Matevosyan, professor in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, in the 26th edition of Eastern Europe, Russia and Central Asia, a book series published by Routledge.

The series is notable for its comprehensive overview of critical topics related to Eastern European, Russian, and Central Asian political, economic, and cultural affairs. Each edition includes a general survey, where leading authorities on the region analyze topics of regional importance, country surveys, with in-depth chapters dedicated to each country, important biographical information about over 150 key political figures active in the region, a directory of the top international organizations and research institutes dealing with the region, and select bibliographies of relevant books and periodicals.

Dr. Ter-Matevosyan’s chapters, “Russian and Turkish Involvement in the South Caucasus since 1991” and “History,” appear in both the opening General Survey and subsequent Armenia Country Survey sections. The former chapter assesses the form that Russia and Turkey’s bilateral relationship has taken in the South Caucasus, with specific attention to geopolitics, conflicts, and geoeconomics. It also focuses on the problems and prospects of the Middle Corridor and its regional implications. The chapter on Armenia, meanwhile, examines its  political history and contemporary politics. The themes pertain to various problems of Armenia’s late Soviet and post-Soviet transformations and provide the most up-to-date account of Armenia’s domestic and foreign policy initiatives and challenges, including the discussion of “The Real Armenia ideology,” the draft of which was presented in February 2025.

Reflecting on the significance of this work, Dr. Ter-Matevosyan shared: “In March 2018, Dominic Heaney, the regional editor at Europa Publications at Routledge, approached me to contribute annually to the coverage of Armenia’s contemporary politics. Since then, I have worked closely with him and the editorial board, providing analysis on Armenia’s evolving domestic and foreign policy landscape. In 2022, he also asked me to introduce and lead a new thematic section on Russia-Turkey relations in the South Caucasus.

To my knowledge, this is the only up-to-date scholarly account of Armenia’s recent political history and contemporary politics. I am glad to report that more and more scholars in Armenia and abroad assign these works in their courses as essential readings and reference materials about Armenia and the region. This ongoing project enables me to bring the latest knowledge and insights into the classroom.”
