AUA Builds Bridges in Science and Technology: CSE’s Role in Community Building

11.03.2025

YEREVAN, Armenia — The fields of computer science, engineering, and data science at the American University of Armenia (AUA) continue to evolve, bringing together professionals, researchers, and students who seek to exchange knowledge and explore new opportunities. The Zaven P. and Sonia Akian College of Science and Engineering (CSE) plays an active role in supporting these professional communities by facilitating discussions, events, and collaborations that connect academia with industry.

Community building is crucial in fields such as computer science, engineering, and data science as it creates a network of support, fosters collaboration, and enhances professional development. By nurturing relationships among students, professionals, and researchers, it enables the exchange of ideas, promotes innovation, and opens doors to new opportunities. A strong community not only allows individuals to learn from one another but also encourages mentorship and growth, ensuring that members are equipped with the knowledge and resources they need to thrive in their fields.

CSE offers degree programs in data science, computer science, and engineering sciences, equipping students with the technical and analytical skills necessary to address real-world challenges. These programs provide students with access to a professional network and opportunities to engage with industry experts across multiple disciplines.

CSE Dean Dr. Aram Hajian states։ “For over a decade the Akian College of Science and Engineering has led by example as Armenia continues to carve its path and make its mark in the growing fields of data science, computer science and engineering sciences. With more and more coursework, research, and industry connectivity, the leadership of the College is committed to maximizing the educational preparedness of its students, thereby augmenting the productivity of established companies and seeding the ecosystem with innovative startups to create value for Armenia and the world.”

Beyond the classroom, CSE regularly organizes events that encourage knowledge sharing and collaboration. In October 2024, the College hosted the 4th Workshop on Collaborative Technologies and Data Science in Smart City Applications (CODASSCA 2024), bringing together scholars, professionals, and students to explore data-driven solutions for urban challenges.

Furthering its commitment to technological advancement, CSE collaborated with the Amazon Web Services (AWS) User Group Armenia to host the inaugural AWS Community Day Armenia in September 2024. The event attracted professionals, students, and technology enthusiasts to discuss developments and best practices in cloud computing.

In November 2024, CSE, in partnership with Optic Inc., hosted Armenia’s largest BioML Hackathon. This event brought together participants to develop innovative solutions at the intersection of biology and machine learning (ML), fostering interdisciplinary collaboration.

CSE also actively supports programming and software development communities. Events such as JavaScript meetups and coding workshops provide students and professionals with opportunities to enhance their programming skills, exchange ideas, and stay updated on the latest developments in the field. Engineering-related initiatives, including robotics competitions and sustainability-focused projects, further contribute to knowledge-sharing and practical learning experiences.

Other key events include the PyData Yerevan Meetups, where data science practitioners, researchers, and students gather regularly to discuss the latest trends and developments in the field. These meetups provide a platform for participants to exchange ideas, share experiences, and explore the practical applications of data science in various industries.

CSE also emphasizes the importance of community building by organizing competitions like “Optimath,” the first optimization and math-modelling Olympiad in Armenia. Such initiatives aim to stimulate interest in applied sciences and challenge participants in problem-solving and modeling.

Dr. Habet Madoyan, the program chair of CSE’s B.S. in Data Science program, emphasizes the importance of community building, remarking։ “CSE and AUA, in general, have a diverse range of stakeholders, with the professional community being among the most important. That’s why we make every effort to support initiatives that originate from the community and contribute to its development. These include meetups, conferences, special community days, talks, and any other events that bring field professionals together under one roof.”

Community building refers to fostering connections among individuals with shared interests, creating opportunities for knowledge exchange, mentorship, and collaboration. In computer science, engineering, and data science, this extends beyond individual events. It involves creating an environment where students, researchers, and professionals can continuously exchange ideas, collaborate on projects, and support one another’s growth. CSE fosters these connections by inviting professionals to mentor students, share their expertise, and engage in discussions on current industry trends.

According to ML researcher Simon Steshin, local communities play a crucial role in fostering talent։ “Many of the most talented people have warm memories of local communities where they began their growth, whether it was a journal club, a competitive math circle, or their school chess gang. While it may not be widely discussed in our meritocratic society, the role of networking and personal relationships in life outcomes still seems huge. In this regard, CSE is an excellent place for building such communities, as it brings together the most talented Armenian students focusing on the hottest scientific field — machine learning.”

To ensure ongoing engagement, CSE actively shares updates on upcoming events, workshops, and networking opportunities through social media and other communication channels. These efforts help maintain a dynamic and interconnected community of students, alumni, and professionals.

Individuals and organizations interested in hosting or collaborating on events and initiatives in computer science, engineering, or data science are welcome to reach out. CSE remains committed to facilitating meaningful interactions that contribute to the development of Armenia’s scientific and technological landscape and support knowledge-sharing across disciplines.

Founded in 1991, the American University of Armenia (AUA) is a private, independent university located in Yerevan, Armenia, affiliated with the University of California, and accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission in the United States.
