TRDP Supports Cheese Production Business in Sizavet

SHIRAK, Armenia — The American University of Armenia (AUA) Turpanjian Rural Development Program (TRDP) proudly announces the successful launch of a cheese production business in Shirak by owner Rudik Bernetyan. Located in the village of Sizavet, this new enterprise signals renewed hope and economic opportunity to the remote community of Ashotsq. Supported by AUA Extension, the business aims to boost the regional economy by creating jobs and expanding local business connections.

More specifically, Bernetyan’s cheese venture will particularly contribute to the development for Sizavet, a small village with a population of about 300 residents. In that regard, the business has created three new jobs in the community, while contributing to the steady flow of revenue for local farmers, generated from the stable sale of milk: 42 families from Sizavet, Bavra and Tavshut provide Bernetsyan with fresh milk on a daily basis. Such stable business relationships are bound to enhance the rural economy, providing small-scale farmers sustainable growth opportunities.

Thanks to the TRDP-funded milk pasteurization equipment, Bernetyan’s enterprise ensures that its dairy products meet high standards of quality and safety. The business currently produces a variety of dairy products, including traditional Armenian cheeses like lori and chanakh, as well as butter, rezhan cream, sour cream, and other dairy products that appeal to the local diet. The enterprise not only aims to meet local community needs but also has the capacity to expand its reach across the entire Shirak region, creating a lasting impact on the local economy.

At the grand opening, Bernetyan expressed deep gratitude to AUA, underscoring the essential role TRDP has played in realizing his vision to life. He particularly highlighted the skills he had acquired through AUA Extension’s Entrepreneurship Skills Training course, along with the mentorship and support of TRDP staff. This guidance helped him develop his unique market identity and establish a business that adheres to high standards.

The AUA Turpanjian Rural Development Program, offers education, funding, and consultations to existing and startup businesses in the rural communities of Shirak, Tavush, Vayots Dzor, Gegharkunik, Lori, and Ararat provinces of Armenia and Javakhk (Georgia). Details regarding eligible communities and eligibility criteria can be found here. The program is currently accepting applications for the next round of training.
