Hakob Janesian (BSDS ’24): From the Battlefield to Boston University

22.08.2024

YEREVAN, Armenia — The son of Syrian-Armenian repatriates, Hakob Janesian (BSDS ’24) matriculated to the American University of Armenia (AUA) after serving his nation in the 2020 Artsakh War as an air defense missile system operator. A 2024 graduate of the Bachelor of Science in Data Science (BSDS) program, he is preparing to continue his studies at Boston University (BU) this fall.

We asked Janesian to share about the influence his experience in the war had on his course of study, his participation in the AUA-Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) study abroad program, and more.

How did your experience as a soldier in the 2020 Artsakh War influence your subsequent academic journey?

Emerging from the devastating outcome of the 2020 war in Artsakh, I found myself constantly reflecting on my experiences in battle, striving to understand them better. In my efforts to gain deeper insight, I came across a book by U.S. military analyst John Antal titled 7 Seconds to Die, which discussed and analyzed the 2020 Artsakh War. A sentence from this book deeply resonated with me: “Untutored courage is useless in the face of educated bullets.” This quote highlighted a reality that was deeply impactful to me. While my bravery as a soldier was undeniable, it was not supported by the vital technological tools.

Transitioning back to civilian life and academic pursuits was challenging, especially in an online learning environment. Attending classes via Zoom felt unfamiliar, and initially, connecting with my peers was tough. The online setting created a sense of detachment, hindering my sense of belonging. However, as we shifted back to in-person classes in the fall of 2021, those barriers began to disappear, making it easier to engage and connect.

Driven by my belief in the power of education and personal growth, I focused on my studies. Even though I had trouble recalling some math concepts and adjusting, I appreciated the support and warm welcome that I received from the AUA community that helped me reintegrate into academic life.

What motivated you to complete your undergraduate studies at AUA?

The decision to complete my undergraduate degree at AUA is a point of pride for me. I made valuable connections with people I might not have met otherwise and gained extensive knowledge. The University’s environment felt familiar and welcoming, even before I matriculated. When I was in middle school, I took extracurricular English language courses, some of which were held in AUA classrooms, through the University’s EEC program. Immediately, the English-language instruction and overall atmosphere made me feel like I was already part of the University community. So, when it came time to pursue higher education, AUA was a natural choice, especially since the Data Science program was exclusively offered there.

What is your most unforgettable memory from AUA?

My most unforgettable memories from AUA are not tied to a single moment, but rather to a recurring experience: the last day of the exam period each semester. On these days, I always felt a deep sense of accomplishment, knowing that I had put in my best effort throughout the semester. Even prior to receiving the final grades, I felt satisfaction in knowing I had successfully completed a challenging period, earning a well-deserved rest.

Why did you choose to study data science?

My passion for data science emerged during my years at Ayb High School, where I developed a strong interest in probability and statistics. As I prepared for university, I took the initiative to familiarize myself with programming, especially Python, knowing it would be a crucial skill for tackling the challenges ahead.

At the time, the BSDS program at AUA was new, but I was excited by the opportunities it presented. While I had some understanding of the direction this field would take me, I have since realized that data science is a rapidly expanding and evolving sphere. I am glad I chose this path and am eager to continue learning and growing in it. Data science is a versatile tool that can be applied in various sectors, such as healthcare, business, sports, and more, providing me with a greater variety of options to explore.

Can you please reflect on your experience in the BSDS program at AUA?

My experience in the BSDS program at AUA was enriching. The curriculum presented various concepts, starting with math-heavy courses and moving toward more applied, project-based classes. This approach allowed me to explore data science from different angles: whether through research and theoretical work or hands-on projects. I particularly appreciated the focus on how data science can be applied in a business context during my time in the Business Analytics track.

Another aspect of the program that I valued was the supportive faculty. The professors were always available to help whether during lectures or office hours or after hours and their guidance made a big difference in my learning experience. Additionally, being part of a motivated and high-quality cohort pushed me to engage more deeply in the classes. The collaborative environment with driven peers made the learning process enjoyable.

What lessons have you learned at AUA that you will carry with you moving forward?

First is the importance of determination and dedicated work. I realized that consistent effort toward a task will eventually yield results. While the outcomes may not always align perfectly with the ideal scenario, the sense of accomplishment and progress are among the most rewarding feelings one can experience.

Another crucial lesson I learned is the power of asking questions. I found that asking questions is one of the most effective ways to remain focused and deeply engaged during lectures and discussions. It helps you better understand the content and ensures that you actively participate in the learning process.

Lastly, I discovered the irreplaceable value of note-taking. Throughout my years at AUA, taking detailed notes allowed me to keep track of class content. This habit proved essential for revisiting earlier topics at home and preparing effectively for exams.

How did your participation in the AUA-WPI exchange program influence your decision to pursue graduate studies in the U.S.?

Participating in the AUA-WPI 2024 exchange program significantly reinforced my motivation to pursue graduate studies in the United States. The experience offered a unique opportunity to immerse myself in American student life while collaborating on the Interactive Qualifying Project with WPI peers. This exposure to a dynamic academic environment emphasized the importance of teamwork and innovation. Additionally, visiting Boston and experiencing its vibrant university culture, including BU, strengthened my commitment to furthering my studies in the U.S. The familiarity with the city now adds a level of comfort and excitement as I prepare to embark upon my graduate journey at BU.

Why did you choose to apply to BU for graduate studies?

Growing up, I developed an appreciation for my parents’ courageous decision to repatriate to Armenia from Syria after spending years in the Diaspora. My father’s journey, which took him to BU for professional training, inspired me to follow in his footsteps by pursuing higher education abroad. With its renowned STEM programs and diverse community, BU represents the ideal environment, in which I can build upon the values of education and resilience that my family instilled in me. Pursuing the Master of Science in Data Science at BU will allow me to delve deeper into my field and broaden my horizons.

How do you think AUA contributed to your admission to BU?

AUA played a vital role in my admission to BU’s Master of Science in Data Science program. It was an invaluable experience to study in a community of peers and lecturers with whom I could freely share my vision. They not only remembered and discussed my goals, but also showed genuine interest, offering emotional support along the way. Being surrounded by people who genuinely cared about my progress kept my vision active and my goals in focus.

Graduating from AUA, a U.S.-accredited university, gave me a significant advantage. My undergraduate degree in data science aligned perfectly with the graduate program at BU, making me a strong candidate. Additionally, AUA’s curriculum, which mirrors the American educational system, has prepared me well for the challenges ahead. The emphasis on critical thinking, problem solving, and effective communication in English has equipped me with skills that will prove indispensable in my graduate studies.

What are your longer-term career plans?

My longer-term career plans involve gaining professional experience, working on impactful projects, and connecting the Armenian data science market to its international counterpart. I believe that BU will help me sharpen my skills and develop a priceless network to achieve these goals.

In the long run, I also aim to mentor younger Armenian generations. During my senior year, I found fulfillment in guiding and motivating my freshman acquaintances, sharing my journey from the warzone to BU to inspire them. I look forward to continuing this by mentoring those who want to pursue education in data science in a more mature and organized way as I progress in my career.

How do you plan to stay in touch with/contribute to your alma mater?

While my career path is still unfolding, I believe there may come a time when I can return as a guest speaker, collaborate on a research project, or partner with AUA on initiatives that align with my expertise. The University holds a special place in my heart, and I will always be proud to say I am an AUA alumnus. If an opportunity arises to give back, I will be ready and willing.

Founded in 1991, the American University of Armenia (AUA) is a private, independent university located in Yerevan, Armenia, affiliated with the University of California, and accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission in the United States. AUA provides local and international students with Western-style education through top-quality undergraduate and graduate degree and certificate programs, promotes research and innovation, encourages civic engagement and community service, and fosters democratic values.
