AUA Hosts Genocide Education Project Fellows
2 min readYEREVAN, Armenia — In early July, fifteen high school teaching fellows of the Genocide Education Project were hosted by the American University of Armenia (AUA) for a series of thought-provoking talks on human rights and genocide education in Armenia.
Hailing from throughout the United States, the teaching fellows spent time at the Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute, attending various lectures and seminars, as well as examining museum exhibitions, archives, artifacts, and academic research on the Armenian Genocide and its aftermath.
On July 8, the fellows engaged in stimulating talks and conversation with AUA faculty, including Dr. Arman Tatoyan, Dr. Suren Manukyan, Dr. Sergey Ghazinyan, and Dr. Tigran Matosyan. These discussions focused on methods and techniques used to teach human rights and genocide at AUA and on improving the understanding of the Armenian viewpoint among American educators. These experiences will equip teaching fellows with the skills and materials required to instruct their own students on the Armenian Genocide and the attendant human rights issues.
The visit included a panel discussion on current concerns affecting Armenia, in addition to the targeted discussions on genocide education. Prominent speakers on the panel, “Armenia Today: Economy, Political System, Education, and the Artsakh Crisis,” included Dr. Tatoyan, chair of the Master of Arts in Human Rights and Social Justice program; Dr. Vardan Baghdasaryan, chair of the Master of Science in Management program; and Dr. Hasmik Kyureghyan, executive director and co-founder of Paradigma Educational Foundation. The panel offered thorough analyses of Armenia’s current socio-political and economic situations, ongoing challenges faced by individuals forcibly displaced from Artsakh, and other issues in Armenian civil society.
