AUA Triangle Park: Construction Underway
2 min readYEREVAN, Armenia — The American University of Armenia (AUA) is pleased to announce that renovation/construction works of the “AUA Triangle Park: A Sustainable, Smart Living Park” Project are currently underway, with completion planned for the end of 2025. The Park project was made possible through a $752,410 grant from the Office of American Schools and Hospitals Abroad (ASHA) of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) that was awarded in September 2019, as well as a $550,000 investment from the University facilitated by donations from generous AUA benefactors. The location of the Project was provided to the University in 2018 by the Yerevan Municipality for unrestricted use for 25 years. The Park will serve as a green, open, and sustainable public space for people of all ages to rest, play, and learn.
The selection of the architectural and construction firms for the Triangle Park’s design and construction was made through open bidding processes. The architectural design of the Park was completed by “ArchiDutch LLC,” a green BIM company, in collaboration with their landscape design partner “MTD Landscape Architects” from the Netherlands, which boasts extensive experience in designing parks on top of underground facilities. The construction/renovation and finishing works are being implemented by “Gravity LLC.”
The Park in its current form is used intensively by residents of the neighborhood and AUA community but lacks quality, atmosphere, and maintenance. In 2020, an extensive study was carried out by AUA students, through which inhabitants’ wishes and ideas were collected and analyzed through a “Stakeholder Engagement Process.” The results of this research have served as the starting point for the concept design of the Triangle Park. The latter ensures that the Park is climate adaptive in every season, strengthening local biodiversity, and implements smart energy and technologies.
“The University and the Arabkir community have been looking forward to this project since 2019. We are pleased to begin the construction works to turn Triangle Park into a beautiful park that will not only serve the AUA community, but also the general public. We remain grateful to ASHA/USAID for their continued support of the University. We are also thankful to the Yerevan Municipality for their partnership and trust in making this project a reality,” said AUA Vice President of Operations Ashot Ghazaryan.
There is a high potential to revitalize and develop the existing Park into a lively and green meeting place for both the AUA community and the adjacent residential area. The concept design proposes transforming the park into a terraced landscape, which introduces a comfortable snake path into the park that will equally accommodate individuals with physical disabilities, adhering to standard plane inclination codes for accessibility. In addition, the terraces offer space for diverse plant species, new trees, and numerous play, sports, and accommodation areas. A playful water element will cool down the area in summer months.
The design also incorporates an underground sports building covered with shrubs and trees, which will be fully integrated into the terraces of the Park.
